Chapters 1-2

 1.) calamity (n.) – a terrible misfortune or disaster

Due to not paying attention in class, Billy experienced a calamity resulting in being unprepared for his big exam.

2.) realm (n.) – a region or kingdom

My bedroom is my realm and I can go there when I am tired or just want to be alone and no one can trespass or bother me.

3.) consternation (n.) – great fear or shock

The result of the baseball hitting the car’s windshield was a surprised look of consternation.

4.) egotistical (adj.) – conceited; being too involved with one’s self image

Out of their circle of friends, he seems to stand out as being very egotistical and self-absorbed and therefore he is the least liked.

5.) imperiously (adv.) – done urgently and without caution

Since they were late for their appointment already, they rushed around the house imperiously forgetting their car keys on the way out the door.

6.) conciliate (v.) – to win over or gain

As a team, we are working together to conciliate money to purchase more books for our classroom.

7.) primordial (adj.) – existing at the very beginning; primitive

Dinosaurs are believed to be primordial because they were the first species to exist in this world.

8.) treachery (n.) – betrayal of trust; disloyalty

A friendship can be ruined if one person decides to cross the line of treachery and betray one’s trust.

9.) veranda (n.) – an open porch or balcony

When the weather is nice, I like to sit outside on the veranda and either read or do my homework.

10.) toil (v.) – to work hard without stopping until the job is done

An excellent grade in this class means that you were able to toil and show outstanding effort on every assignment.
