- Copying exactly from a source without providing quotation marks or giving credit to that source.
- Paraphrasing from a source without giving credit to where you got the idea.
- Copying someone else's paper and putting you name on it.
Plagiarism is illegal and unethical. If you copy from someone else's work and don't give them credit, you are stealing their ideas. This can lead to failing a class or to being sued by the owner of the material you copied.
Plagiarism isn't:
- Introducing an idea and acknowledging the borrowed material in your works cited page. ("According to Mr. Patota,...", or Mr. Patota is known for saying... , or In his book on page 30, Mr. Patota states, )
- Paraphrasing something using your own words and writing style. Then giving credit to the source you found inspiration from in you works cited page.
- Using quotation marks "quote" around your quotation and then citing the source in your works cited page.
