English
In 6100 English class, we work on three strands of English Language Arts:
-
grammar: Our main text is Prentice-Hall Writing and Grammar (2008) Chapters 14-22, including supplements.
-
writing: We use the same textbook, Chapters 1-13, with many additional mini-assignments, including focus on the Six Traits of Writing. At any given moment, students are working on drafts of two or more assignments, including options. Approximately once per cycle, I take my classes to the computer resource lab for preparation of final drafts.
-
spelling: We use limited lists (10 words) during the full weeks. We have a pre-test on Monday, followed by related skills homework due the next day, and three-times each practice due on Friday, the day of the final quiz.
I offer weekly help sessions from October through May, 2:30-3:30. (upcoming dates: Wednesday, 5/6; Wednesday, 5/14; Wednesday, 5/21, and final session of the year Wednesday, 5/28)
Thanks to the generosity of donors, our students have access to two daily newspapers: the Standard-Times, and The Enterprise.* Because of my involvement with the Newspaper in Education program, I attend several workshops a year to obtain related materials and techniques to make full use of these papers and supplements offered.
