Social Studies
Our textbook is World Studies: Africa (Prentice-Hall, 2005) We first do an overview of Africa's physical geography and natural resources. We then narrow our focus to study ten specific countries. Students will work as partners on a project about one country, focusing on the five themes of geography (movement of people and goods, regions, location, interaction of people with the environment, and place)
Each term begins with a review of basic geography concepts, such as the five themes (MR LIP), map skills, and simple economics.
Additional social studies skills include: note-taking, reviews for quizzes, using primary and secondary sources for research, citing sources correctly, and oral presentations. Classroom activities include supplemental written work and such activities as simulations. (Term I: Hunters and Gatherers; Term II: Limited Resources)
