ADVERBS

adverbs - Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Adverbs DO NOT modify nouns (adjectives do that!). Adverbs answer questions like how something is done, where, why, when and to what extent. Adverbs often end in "ly."

Examples:

I walk slowly. (The adverb modifies the verb in this case.)
[Walk is a verb in this sentence - it is the action word. Slowly is an adverb telling how I walk.]

She is very pretty. (The adverb modifies an adjective in this case.)
[Pretty is an adjective describing she. Very is an adverb indicating how pretty she is.

He speaks very loudly. (An adverb modifies another adverb in this case.)
[Loudly is an adverb that modifies the verb speaks. Very is another adverb that indicates how loudly he speaks. Both very and loudly are the adverbs in this sentence.]
