1.) anguish (n.) – great pain, suffering, or grief

Sadly, he cried in anguish once he realized that the dog would not survive the operation.

2.) efficient (adj.) - capable of handling a task without wasting time or effort

We can certainly say that he is a very efficient worker since he was able to get his homework done for three during classes during “team time.”

3.) emanate (v.) – to come forth or originate from

Did that high grade emanate from the time and effort you put into studying for your test?

4.) pedantic (adj.) – overly concerned with minor or unimportant details

She expressed a pedantic tone over the details of the assignment even though the directions were easy to follow.

5.) ominous (adj.) – evil or harmful; threatening or malignant

The Man with the Red Eyes is a very ominous and cruel character in a Wrinkle in Time.

6.) simultaneous (adj.) – happening at the same time

Our “team time” occurs during a simultaneous time slot each day.

7.) insolent (adj.) – rude or disrespectful

Once Charles Wallace had become hypnotized by the ominous man with the red eyes, he spoke with an insolent and rude tone towards Meg and Calvin.

8.) implore (v.) – to beg; to plead

Meg tried to implore the man with the red eyes to reveal her father, but that man would not obey her request.

9.) somber (adj.) – dark, dull, and gloomy

In the beginning of the novel, Mrs. Whatsit’s house was believed to be somber and possibly even haunted, so, with the exception of Charles Wallace, not many people would trespass through that area.

10) vacant (adj.) – empty or void; having no contents

Is that box vacant? I would like to begin packing my supplies, but I won’t be able to unless it has been emptied out.
