Philosophy for Middle School Education

Middle school age students are at a period of transition in their development. A quality physical education program is an integral part of the total educational process and offers a wide variety of activities that will provide opportunities for the students to make the developmental transition from child to adult. A well-balanced program will offer students the opportunity to develop an acceptable level of fitness, a broad spectrum of physical skills, and the knowledge necessary to use the skills and maintain fitness for a lifetime of active participation.

Goals of Middle School Physical Education

The specific goals of the Freetown and Lakeville Middle School are as follows:

  1. To assist each individual in developing his value system consistent with that of the family, school, community and society.
  2. To recognize the need for good sportsmanship, cooperation and respect for themselves and others.
  3. To provide knowledge and activities that are designed to enhance the components of fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle.
  4. To provide for the self-discovery, self-realization, self-confidence and courage in a safe, physical setting.
  5. To provide the students with an opportunity to apply learned skills and strategies in a variety of sports activities.
  6. To promote the importance of personal responsibility, safety skills, and healthy habits.
  7. To foster enjoyment and the challenge of an activity for its own sake.
  8. To stress lifetime skills that will add to the quality of life and enjoyment of lifelong recreational activities.
